What is proofreading?

Proofreading is the final pass before content is released to the public. Its purpose is to ensure that your work is ready to be published. I check:

  • The grammar, spelling, word use, and punctuation.

  • That the style and formatting is consistent.

  • That the structure is logical and complete.

  • That the meaning is clear.

For more information, the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP) has a useful FAQs page here

Content I proofread.

I work on a range of material, including:

  • Websites/online content.

  • Business writing.

  • Non-fiction.

  • Fiction/creative writing.

Proofreading methods.

I am trained to use the following proofreading methods:

  • Microsoft Word – Track Changes.

  • Adobe Acrobat Reader – PDF markup.

  • British Standards Institution (BSI) proofreading symbols – hard copy or PDF.

Style guides.

I am practiced in working to a house style guide and using standard reference guides.

Examples include:

  • New Oxford Style Manual – New Hart’s Rules.

  • The Chicago Manual of Style

If you prefer a different style guide, I may still be able to complete the work you need. Please get in touch.

Rates.

Please get in touch at info@caret.org.uk. I will be delighted to understand more about your project and provide a quotation.

My rates are informed by the guidelines published by the CIEP here and by the Editorial Freelancers

Association (EFA) here.

I tailor these guidelines to your project and to the type and complexity of your content.

Let's chat.

I offer a seamless discovery process to get to know you and your project in more detail. I will discuss your preferences and agree a suitable approach with you.

I'm also happy to provide a free sample proofread so that you can see if we're a good fit for one another.

I will follow your brief, always efficient, friendly, and on time.
